American Indian Welfare Assistance distribute of what may be the most important product for Native American Elders – good nutritious food. This is hard to come by on the reservation. Elders are much honored and revered members of Native American communities. They have been the guardians of tradition and of their native tongues. They provide strength and stability in their extended families. Yet Elders today live in some of the poorest areas in the United States and one of their most pressing problems on Indian Reservations is the lack of good quality nutritious and affordable food. The result of this problem is that many Elders suffer from by diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, and other ailments that can be improved with a healthy diet.
